Two brothers from Florida have been accused of murder and robbery in connection to the shooting death of a man in Orange County. According to authorities, 30-year-old Amado Nieves and his brother 26-year-old Rafael Nieves are facing charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by an out-of-state convicted felon. The incident occurred on July 29 when deputies responded to reports that shots had been fired near East Bronson Highway and Lake Holden Drive in Apopka. When they arrived at the scene, the deputies found 25-year-old Alexander Montufar Rodriguez suffering from a “life threatening gunshot wound.” He was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he passed away as a result of his injuries.
Investigators learned that the two brothers had set up a drug deal after exchanging messages back and forth with Rodriguez. According to Sheriff John Mina, Amado believed that he was being scammed during the drug transaction and then shot Rodriguez with his gun. The brothers then allegedly stole money and items before fleeing the scene in their vehicle.
After an extensive search involving ground units, K9 officers, aviation units, Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), Forensics Search Teams (FAST,) and UCR detectives, the two suspects were located by law enforcement in Panama City Beach on August 8th. Both men were arrested without incident and will be extradited back to Orange County Jail soon where they will each face charges of first degree murder and two counts of armed robbery with a firearm.
This is yet another tragedy related to drug deals gone wrong which could have been prevented if not for the suspects' poor decision making skills. Anyone who believes they may have valuable information regarding this case is urged to contact Crimeline at 800–423–TIPS(8477).
