Stunning Auroras Light Up Night Skies in New Mexico and Arizona

   Astrophotographers and skywatchers were treated to a rare celestial spectacle as vibrant auroras danced across the night sky in New Mexico and Arizona.

   The unexpected auroral display lit up the sky on the evening of September 1st, surprising and delighting sky enthusiasts in the region.  The colorful lights created an otherworldly atmosphere, transforming the landscape into a breathtaking canvas of blues, greens, purples, and pinks.

   Auroras, also known as northern or southern lights depending on their location, are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with the Earth's magnetosphere.
​   These particles then follow the planet’s magnetic field lines towards the poles, where they interact with the Earth’s atmosphere, creating the magnificent light shows seen in the night sky.

   
   Despite being more common closer to the poles, auroras can occasionally be seen at lower latitudes under specific conditions.  Skywatchers in the Southwest region of the United States were fortunate enough to witness this rare phenomenon, capturing stunning photos and memories that will last a lifetime.
