   Spiders are fascinating creatures that have invaded our homes, gardens, and even our nightmares. But what do we really know about their behavior, specifically within their own groups?

Mating Habits

   For some spider species, mating is a risky and potentially lethal affair. For example, female black widow spiders will often devour their mates after mating, earning them the nickname "widow makers".

​   However, not all species are as deadly. Some spiders follow a more civil mating process where the male will approach the female and court her with a carefully choreographed dance.

   Interestingly, some species of spiders are communal, meaning they live together in large groups.
   These spiders have developed complex mating rituals, resulting in the males courting not just one female, but multiple females within the group. In these societies, males need to perform a certain level of competency in their dance or display to prove their worth as mates.

Cannibalism

  Cannibalism is a commonly associated attribute with spiders, however, it's not quite as cut-and-dried as it may seem. When it comes to some social spiders, the group dynamic can work in the spider's favour, with the group collectively feeding on prey and even egg sacs.

   Contrary to popular belief, cannibalism is not just limited to female spiders, male spiders can also be victims. In fact, in certain species, the male knows the dangers of mating and will attempt to outsmart the female to avoid being lunch.

​   For example, some male spiders will secure their sperm web before approaching the female, then quickly withdraw immediately after insemination before the female can strike.

​   Social spiders are perhaps the most exciting to observe. They are known for their communal behavior which can include working together to build shared webs, raising young together or hunting in packs.
​   Certain species even divvy up tasks, like some spiders who take on the role of nursery spiders, defending and feeding the eggs.

   Within these communal societies, there is a strict hierarchy. The spiders form tiers of social classes, where high-ranking members are afforded the best prey and given prime real estate within the group's web.
